Verification

Verify before you send: bounces are reputation poison

Every bounce is a vote against your domain. Verification is the cheapest deliverability insurance in cold email.

Of all the ways to hurt deliverability, bouncing is the most avoidable. A hard bounce tells the provider you mailed an address that does not exist — do it at scale and you look exactly like a purchased-list spammer. The tragedy is that every one of those bounces was preventable for pennies.

What verification catches

  • Dead addresses — mailboxes that no longer exist and will hard-bounce.
  • Catch-all domains — addresses that accept everything and tell you nothing.
  • Role accounts and traps — info@, admin@, and the spam traps that exist to catch bulk senders.

When to verify

Always before first use, and again for any list older than a few months — addresses decay constantly as people change jobs. Verification is not a one-time chore; it is part of the sending workflow, every list, every time.

What to do with the results

Mail the valid ones. Treat catch-alls and unknowns with caution — or leave them out entirely if placement matters more than volume. And suppress every hard bounce permanently. Mailing a known-dead address twice is choosing to damage your own reputation.

ColdPilot verifies addresses before they go out and suppresses hard bounces automatically, so dead addresses never get a second chance to hurt your domain.

The math

Verification costs a fraction of a cent per address. One burned domain costs weeks of warm-up to replace. There is no cold-email expense with a better return — verify everything, every time.
